when in rome, my wife and i were big fans of hapsburg extra strength absinthe (~95% alcohol) but the best time with absinthe involves drinking some other alcohol afterwards. Once you drink something else the drunkenness is like a kick in the face, and although we never had a hangover, just one shot of vodka after several drinks of absinthe had us blitzed, although not tired at all. I'd recommend that for a good night!

Great review, and a fun read! to my understanding absinthe in the US is regulated by the good folks at the FDA, who make sure that the Thujone (the hallucinogen in Wormwood) never exceeds 15 parts per million, basically a threshold amount. in order to consume enough thujone in store-bought absinthe to really feel it you would have to consume so much alcohol that you would just pass out and miss out on the whole experience. the flavors and colors are mostly artificial. however, dried wormwood can be bought at an herb store or health food store as a supplement and is very cheap (I got enough for a fifth of absinthe for about $3). with this you can make your own absinthe! with lots and lots of mind altering potential! the recipes are simple - wormwood, vodka, spices, etc, and easily modified to your tastes. you can find all this online with a simple search. Again, great review, and I do hope you try some "homebrew" absinthe and let us know how it compares to the store bought stuff.
