Ok, so I finally broke down the other day and bought a sixer of Rogue Dead Guy Ale. I say “finally broke down,” because it takes a lot for me to drop $12 for a six pack of anything that’s isn’t guaranteed to at least make my wiener tingle. Trust me, before I bought it I checked the label for some kind of guarantee to see if they could tell me what I was getting for that much coinage. There was no guarantee. Just a picture of a dead guy wearing a funny hat. Truth be told the name was good enough to warrant at least spending one night with Dead guy Ale.
I took the most expensive beer I’d ever bought home and put 5 in the fridge and 1 in the freezer while I got my grill grill fired up and swept the leaves off the porch. (Yes I know it’s the middle of winter, but cooking and eating outside in February is how we roll) By the time I was done, the beer in the freezer was as cold as a well digger’s ass. Which is perfect.
I poured the Rogue into my trusty Dog ‘n Suds mug and let the head settle. Rogue Dead Guy Ale has a very sharp and distinct taste. However, after the first one the distinctness kind of disappears and by number 3 it tastes no different than the hundreds of specialty brews like it. Don’t get me wrong, this is a pretty good beer. It’s just not $12 a six pack good. Probably the only thing this beer would be good for at this price would be to take it to a party, put it in the fridge and then show your ass when you realize everybody drank it just to see what it tasted like while you were outside.

You got it way to cold. Really cold beer = miller lite. You just don’t want to taste it so you get it super cold.
Dead guy should have been around 45f to get the most out of it.
What you did was similar to chilling red wine.

This is one of my favorites. Try it on draft. Must have come a long way to get to you, it is an Oregon brew I think.

Damn! It is $12 where you are!! Come to Portland, it would be unheard of if a 6 of it ever came to like $10 let alone $12, plus we have more beer here, and damn good beer to.
I think my last 6 of it was like almost $8

I give Oregon credit for my love of oatmeal stout from when my wife and I spent our honeymoon at Timberline Lodge on MT. Hood. We stayed for a few days and then drove up the coast stopping at every little microbrewery we came to. But yes. $12 a six pack is too much especially when I can almost buy a gallon of Black Velvet for that much:)

yeah dead guy really isn’t the greatest of brews, and for $12 you should try Sierra Nevada Bigfoot barleywine/ale. Its an awesome brew and at 9.6% you will have a good time.

On tap, or from a fresh bottle, this is a spectacular ale. I wonder if your bottles were stale, or perhaps had experienced several temperature variations on the way from the brewery to your fridge. I know when I have a Dead Guy, it is distinctive from the first gulp to the last. And as somebody said already, super-cold is not the best way to enjoy this beer.
Even better is Rogue’s “Double Dead Guy Ale”, found on tap in some bars, and in bright red bottles in some stores. That’ll knock you on your ass.

I’m sorry, but you really shouldn’t be reviewing beer when you obviously know nothing about how to properly drink one in the first place. You never put good beer in the freezer. Get it too cold and you mask the flavor. That’s the kind of shit you do to fucking Bud Light at a frat party, which sounds like the type of beer you should stick to from here on out as you seem to have no discernible palate.

One of the best beers I’ve ever had (out of I’m guessing about 300+ varieties I’ve tasted over the years including several of my own bews) was Rogue Smoked Ale sold in Ashland, OR in sealed mason jars. My god that was heaven and I’ve been looking for something like it for about 22 years. I’ll try my own batch one day…

I’m with Michael. Anyone who has to pay $12 a SP doesn’t know where to shop. I buy DG in neighborhood food stores for $7.95 in Tampa. Rogue ales are quite good, Beer in the freezer? what do you normally drin, bud Lite?

$12 for a six pack is the norm here in Canada, lol. Thanks for the review of Dead Guy, I’m enjoying some now :D
